World of Warcraft: Legion

For the last couple weeks, Blizzard has been teasing today as the announcement of their next expansion.  There's been a lot of speculation leading up, but we finally have a name, as well as a slew of information about the game.  The next expansion will be titled Legion!

After the events of Warlords of Draenor, Gul'dan's fate is unknown.  It turns out that he's heralding a massive invasion of Azeroth by the Burning Legion. How he returned to Azeroth, it hasn't been said, but because of him, Azeroth faces the largest invasion of the Legion in history.

I'll give a short summation of the announcement trailer before going into much more detail farther down. First, we'll be getting a new class, the Demon Hunter.  Level cap will be raised to 110, and we'll fight across a new continent: The Broken Isles.    We'll have a new honor system, artifact weapons, and class order halls.

The Broken Isles is a lost continent on Azeroth.  Here, we'll find the Tomb of Sargeras, which is an active gateway to many Legion worlds.  Even more fascinating, the expansion *begins* with the invasion and actually, that world event will be happening before the expansion actually drops. After the events of the Broken Shores (where the Tomb resides) we'll wake up to "a world on fire".  It's possible this means the world will be catastrophically changed again.  Because of this, we will take up the Artifact weapons to return hope to life, as well as founding Class Orders to help reshape the world.

Through the story of the Demon Hunters, we'll finally see the story of the Illidari.  We'll travel to the prison world of Mordoom and learn what it means to be a Demon Hunter.  We'll be searching the Broken Isles for the Pillars of Creation, the Titan Relics used to shape Azeroth, to close the wound left by the Burning Legion portal in the Tomb of Sargeras.  The Kirin Tor, now led by Khadgar, will move Dalaran to the Broken Isles to help.

How about some information about Zones?! Yea!  First up, is Val'Sharah, the forgotten druid refuge where Malfurion became a druid.  We will fight Xavius and his satyr army to keep him from unleashing the Emerald Nightmare on Azeroth.  As such, we'll finally see the Emerald Dream.  Next up is Stormheim, the home of the Vrykul.  We will learn the origins of both them and the Val'kyr.  In Azsuna, we'll meet a dying breed of the blue dragonflight while racing Azshara for control of the Pillar in this zone.

Highmountain is the highest point of the Broken Tauren and home of the Highmountain Tauren.  This is also where the Earthwarden's Lair resides.  Further, Nesingwary returns, which isn't really a surprise.  Finally, we have Suramar.  We will meet the Nightborn, a race of elves that has become pawns of the Burning Legion.  They also possess the Nightwell, a corruption of one of the Pillars we are searching for.  Lastly, the zone presentation ended with a comment that Alleria and Turalyon  will be making an appearance in this expansion, which is welcome news indeed.

As previously mentioned, Artifact weapons will be added to the game; to fight the Legion, we need the strongest weapons known to Azeroth.  Each specialization will have their own artifacts.  As you play the expansion, you'll earn Artifact Power, which will be used to upgrade the traits of your artifact, as well as visual customization.

A list of weapons we've been given names to: Ashbringer will be wielded by Retribution Paladins; Felo'melorn for Fire Mages; The Eagle Spear for Survival Hunters; Icebringer and Soulreaper for Frost Death Knights, forged from the lost shards of Frostmourne; Doomhammer for Enhancement Shamans; Sheilun, Staff of the Mists for Mistweaver Monks; and the Fangs of the First Nightsaber for Feral Druids, which modify the model for your shapeshift.  Each artifact will have their own story behind them, so there's a lot not to say aside from knowing the names of a couple.

After we retrieve our artifact, our character founds an Order for their class.  We'll recruit Champions, which will be similar to the Followers from Warlords, but much more meaningful.  They'll be much more integrated into the world and as such will feel more useful (an example Champion given was Lady Liadrin).  Each class Order will have a location meaningful to the class; for instance, Paladins will have a hidden sanctum below Light's Hope Chapel, Shamans overlook the Maelstrom, and Warlocks have a enclave on a legion portal world.

Blizzard admits that they 'did dungeons a bit of a disservice' and that they are essential.  As such, there will be more dungeons in Legion.  They have announced a total of nine thus far: the Halls of Valor (A Stormheim dungeon that is inspired by Valhalla and the origin of the Val'kyr), Black Rook Hold (A Val'Sharah dungeon that is home to Kur'talos Ravencrest), the Vault of the Wardens (The prison of the Demon Hunters, and we will being the hunt for Illidan), Eye of Azshara (In Azsuna, contending against the minions of Azshara), Darkheart Thicket (In Val'Sharah at the base of the world tree Seladrassil and the heart of the nightmare corruption), Helheim (Ghost Ship of the Damned in Stormheim), Suramar City, Neltharion's Lair (The lair of the Earthwarden in Highmountain.  The Draugbar citadel resides here now) and the Violet Hold (The proximity of Dalaran to the Tomb of Sargeras activates hidden secrets within the Hold.  We're going to learn more about Dalaran, the mages of Dalaran and the world itself).

As for raids, we have two announced thus far.  The first is the Emerald Nightmare.  It will have seven bosses, and we will be travelling through the Emerald Dream, twisted and shadowed.  We'll be pursuing Cenarius and ultimately face Xavius at the heart of the Nightmare and cleanse the Dream.  The second is Suramar Palace.  With 10 bosses, it is the home of the Nightwell, a corruption of the Pillar of Creation and the center of Suramar's Power.  We will finally defeat Gul'dan here.

Next up we are finally covering the Demon Hunter!  As a Hero Class, it enters the story line after being awoken in the Vault of the Wardens.  However, the story experience will begin during the Siege of the Black Temple, when Illidan sends his best Illidari on a secret mission, and will progress to Mordoom, Sargeras's prison world.  Demonic Fury will be the resource for the class, and it will only have two specs: Havoc DPS, and Vengeance Tanking.  They didn't explain much about the gameplay of the class, but the class is the first to possess a double jump.  It seems very fascinating, and I can't wait to see how this class fits into the metagame.

Finally, they are revamping the PvP Honor System.  Dubbed Version 3, they will be transitioning to a Talent System that only works within PvP.  There will be 50 ranks, and the higher your rank the more modification you have for those talent.  Once you hit max rank, you are able to reset your talents and gain a Prestige rank.  In doing so, you have to relevel your Talents, but it allows you to unlock varied items, such as portrait badges, as well as unique mounts and pvp artifact visuals.

Beta will be beginning later this year so we'll probably be hearing more about that closer to Blizzcon, as well as hopefully a release date.  All in all, I'm excited for what they're bringing, but I'm also afraid.  It all sounds amazing, but it could be *too* much content.  We're taking out Gul'dan, possibly crippling Azshara, as well as doing severe damage to the Burning Legion.  Not even mentioning the Emerald Dream.  There's a lot of enemies that we'll be taking out so I'm not sure where they can go from here..

To opt into the beta, you can do so on your battle.net account - and here is the b.net page that gives further breakdown of the expansion, including better exposition on things that I may not have explained well.

The Reaper Has Arrived!

Its been over 24 hours now since the newest expansion was released for Diablo 3 - Reaper of Souls. I will try to avoid spoilers on the post below.

Mathael

I will tell you what it has been a struggle to pull myself away from it to write up this post but it has certainly delivered on rejuvenating the game and making it fun to play. Act 5 where Westmarch lies certainly has a much darker tone then usual for even Diablo when you see Mathael's plans unfolding for Sanctuary. A particularly disturbing place is imaged below in the early part of Act 5...

Bodies

After Mathael is stopped however a new adventure mode is accessible and it is certainly an adventure. Travel to any act, collect bounties on some more well known monsters and some not so well known. Complete events or cleanse chests and shrines. It is very open ended on what can be done.  For your troubles be rewarded with XP, Gold and a chance for blood shards that will allow you to feel like Gheed has come back to the game for each bounty you complete. If you complete all of the bounties in a single act in the game, a small treasure box with even more loot will be given to you by our favorite Mortal Angel.

Bounties

So after you collect all your bounties and you find several rift shards in your inventory as part of that.. you can join up with some friends and enter one of the Nephalem Rifts (friends not required, but helpful!) These rifts defy the normal game mechanics in terms of the environments, monsters you find, even shrines. As a small taste of what you can find, imagine a shrine that removes all resource costs... For you barbarian fans out there that is SIX (yes 6) Avalanches in less then a minute.

So if you have not yet picked up the game or have been teetering on the edge based on the bad rep that D3 classic has gotten, don't think, just buy it and get playing. You will not be disappointed and find that while it took a bit longer then usual, Blizzard has delivered another spectacular experience. Now, back to reaping the souls!

Hearthstone Patch Notes - 1.0.0.4944 - All That Glitters!

Zeriyah 3/11/2014 113

The latest Hearthstone patch is coming! With this patch, we’re fixing a ton of bugs, adding some extra awesome Ranked Play rewards, making a couple minor adjustments to card balance and . . . well, there’s a lot of stuff here! Let’s tackle this big patch together, feature by feature, shall we?

Ranked Play Rewards and Changes

We first announced our plans for Ranked Play rewards at BlizzCon during our Fireside Chat panel, and now they’re ready to be unleashed!  First off we’ve got the Golden Heroes.

To get a Golden Hero of your very own, all you need to do is win 500 Ranked Play games with any given Hero. After you hit 500 wins, your experienced Hero will gain a gold border, animate, and gain a golden animated Hero Power. Your opponent will be able to see your Golden Hero as well! Impress your friends and opponents alike. Check out the awesome animations on Jaina, Garrosh, and Thrall in this video!

The next Ranked Play reward is the extra fancy alternate card back! Participating in each official Ranked Play season will offer a new card back that you’ll get at the end of each season. Card backs replace the default artwork on the reverse side of your decks. The game interface will allow you to easily swap between any card back you’ve added to your collection. More information about the first official Ranked Play season and its card back rewards will be announced at a later time.

We’ll be making an additional change to Ranked Play as well, so we can ensure a more fun experience for everyone as we transition from season to season.  Many players have felt like the start of each Ranked Play season was difficult since rankings were reset for all players, regardless of how far they progressed that season.

With this patch, you’ll receive bonus stars at the start of each season based on your performance from the previous season. This way, players that have progressed far into any given Ranked Play season will not be challenging those potentially new to the game or stomping all over players who are trying Ranked Play for the first time.

You’ll receive one bonus star for each rank you achieved in the previous season. For example, if you attained Legend, Innkeeper (Rank 1), or Black Knight (Rank 2) rank in any given season, at the start of the next season you would start off at Questing Adventurer (Rank 16) rather than Angry Chicken (Rank 25).

Balance Changes

In order to ensure a fun and balanced game for everyone, we’ll be making changes to two cards in this patch: Tinkmaster Overspark and Nat Pagle.

Tinkmaster Overspark is now a 3/3 (up from 2/2) and now reads: Battlecry: Transform another random minion into a 5/5 Devilsaur or a 1/1 Squirrel.

  • Tinkmaster Overspark is a neutral card that silences and often shrinks big creatures. This reduces the amount of big, fun creatures in the environment. We think this change will increase the amount fun creatures in the environment, and bring him more in-line with his cost and overall power. Tinkmaster should still show up in certain types of decks, but will no longer be appearing in every high level deck.

Nat Pagle now reads: At the start of your turn, you have a 50% chance to draw an extra card.

  • Nat Pagle will now draw a card at the start of your turn rather than at the end. Nat had too much draw power for a card that is fairly hard to counter so early in the game, making it almost an auto-include for many decks.  This change reduces the power of the card and gives players more time to counter the card before it starts.

Any changes made from here on out will be because we deem them absolutely necessary.

Stay Connected!

A reconnect feature has been added to Hearthstone! Whether you’re in the middle of a heated match in Ranked or Casual Play or racking up the wins in the Arena, our reconnect feature will allow you to try to seamlessly get back into your game in progress.

If you’re disconnected from a game, the reconnect feature will give you 60 seconds to re-log into Hearthstone to keep the action going. In order to maintain the fast pace of the game for both you and your opponent, if one of you happens to disconnect mid-match, the game will continue as if either of you were still playing. Try not to be gone too long, or that turn timer may be sizzling down when you get back!

Speaking of staying connected, you can now play Hearthstone in other regions across the world! Whether you prefer to duel in the Americas, Europe, or Asia, you can swap your region with just a couple of clicks in the Battle.net Desktop App. Keep in mind that your Hearthstone collections, friends, and progress are unique per region and won’t transfer over.

Bugs SMASH!

Thanks to your feedback and continued efforts in reporting bugs in the Hearthstone beta, we’ve been able to tackle many of the issues players have been experiencing. We have addressed all known circumstances and issues that result in minions swapping places on the board and cards overlapping in hand.  These bugs were a result of many factors, and both were particularly challenging to address. We appreciate your patience as we worked diligently on resolving these issues.

You can see additional bug fixes in the patch notes below!

From all of us on the Hearthstone team, thank you so much for offering feedback, reporting bugs, testing our Play modes, testing balance, and helping us evolve the game into something everyone can enjoy. Your feedback is incredibly valuable to us, and we all hope that Hearthstone is a game that you’ll love for years to come.

Hearthstone Patch Notes - 1.0.0.4944

General

  • Golden Heroes have been added and now can be unlocked after winning 500 Ranked games with a Hero! Track your progress on the deck selection screen in Ranked Mode.

  • New card backs have been added.  Collect these by doing awesome things such as participating in each Ranked Season!

  • The Hearthsteed mount reward has been added and can now be obtained for your World of Warcraft account! Win 3 games in Play or Arena mode to acquire one of your own!

  • You can now connect to other regions (Americas, Europe, Korea, Taiwan) of Hearthstone regardless of the region that is set on your Battle.net account. Account progress and card collections are saved separately per region. This feature will become available once the patch is live in all regions.

  • The “Players Near Me” feature is now enabled by default.  You can disable this feature in the Options Menu.

  • The queue timer now only shows up after you’ve been waiting a while.

  • The total amount of gold that an account can hold at any given time has been set at 20,000 gold; gold cannot be earned on accounts with 20,000 or more gold until some gold has been spent.  This cap is intended to combat certain methods of gold acquisition that violate our Terms of Service. The spirit of fair play is extremely important to us, and we will continue to monitor gold acquisition activity closely to ensure a fun and enjoyable game environment for everyone.

  • Certain Expert cards have been changed and the amount of dust that you get from disenchanting these cards have been temporarily increased such that it is equal to the amount of dust that it would have originally cost to craft those cards. Affected cards are:

    • Nat Pagle

    • Tinkmaster Overspark

Ranked Play

  • During each Ranked Season change, players may now start the new season at a rank higher than the default Angry Chicken rank, depending on the rank that was obtained at the end of the previous season. You’ll receive one bonus star for every rank you achieved in the previous season.

  • The Angry Chicken rank now starts with 0 stars, instead of 1. Bawk!?

Arena

  • Arena rewards at 10, 11, and 12 wins no longer reward common non-golden cards.

Visuals

  • Many new card effects have been added. +3 Sparkles/+5 Shinies.

  • Minions who have Taunt and Stealth now have an effect that more clearly indicates that Taunt is temporarily disabled during Stealth.

  • Mass disenchanting now has new and improved graphics. Now you can mass disenchant in style!

  • The UI that pops up when challenging a friend to a duel has been improved. Wow, so challenge.

  • Minions that have been blessed by Blessing of Wisdom now show the trigger “lightning bolt”. Talk about a bright idea!

Gameplay

  • If you disconnect from a game, you now have 60 seconds to try and reconnect and pick up from where you left off.

  • The Expert AI has been sent to Hearthstone training camp and should now be more challenging.

  • If a player’s deck contains all Golden cards, a Golden Coin will compliment your deck if you happen to go second.

  • Unlocking a hero now plays that Hero’s emote. Well met!

  • Secrets can now only activate on your opponent’s turn.

    • Activating your own secrets feels a little strange, but mostly, the ability to do this was preventing us from creating new and powerful secrets that trigger off of events you can easily control (like a minion dying).  They end up functioning just like spells, instead of trying to bait your opponent into a bad play.  This change keeps secrets working like traps you lay for your opponent, instead of spells that you cast and use on your own turn.

Card Changes

  • Nat Pagle now reads: At the start of your turn, you have a 50% chance to draw an extra card.

    • Nat Pagle will now draw a card at the start of your turn rather than at the end. Nat had too much draw power for a card that is fairly hard to counter so early in the game, making it almost an auto-include for many decks.  This change reduces the power of the card and gives players more time to counter the card before it starts.

  • Tinkmaster Overspark is now a 3/3 (up from 2/2) and now reads: Battlecry: Transform another random minion into a 5/5 Devilsaur or a 1/1 Squirrel.

    • Tinkmaster is a neutral card that silences and often shrinks big creatures. This reduces the amount of big, fun creatures in the environment. We think this change will increase the amount fun creatures in the environment, and bring him more in-line with his cost and overall power. Tinkmaster should still show up in certain types of decks, but will no longer be appearing in every high level deck.

Bug Fixes

  • Water Elemental (Mage) will now properly freeze armored heroes as intended.

  • Ancestral Healing (Shaman) will now always attempt to heal a minion for its full Health regardless of its current Health.

  • The issue where minions randomly swap battle positions with other minions is a result of many factors and issues. All known circumstances and issues that result in minions dancing randomly around have been resolved.

  • Cards now better respect personal space while in a player’s hand. Similar to the minion swapping issue, all known circumstances and issues that result in cards overlapping with other cards in a player’s hand have been resolved.

  • The New Deck button in the Collection Manager no longer stays highlighted if you quickly click the Done and No buttons after selecting a hero.

  • The Hearthstone client will no longer remain in the foreground when you click on another program.

  • You can now select a friend in the friends list by clicking on their medal in Play mode.

  • If you were playing a friendly game when daily quests were granted, you are now correctly notified after the game.

  • The Repair Bot's healing ability now generates an entry in the game history.

  • Fixed an issue that could cause the buttons to stop working for a short moment when transitioning back to the main hub.

  • Fixed an issue that prevented some accounts from properly receiving friendly challenges.

  • Fixed an issue that prevented some accounts from joining Play, Practice or Friendly games if they have a custom deck in their collection.

  • Fixed an issue where entering a new Arena run while getting a new daily quest can cause the Arena purchase and the back buttons to be unresponsive.

  • Fixed an issue where you will receive a toast stating your friend has just come online if you log into Hearthstone and that friend was already online.

  • Fixed an issue where attempting to create a new deck would cause the game to time out after about a minute.

  • Fixed an issue where backing out of a deck list while its deck tile is animating to the top of the list will cause the deck list buttons to become unresponsive.

  • Fixed an issue where cards opened in packs or earned from defeating heroes may not appear in your collection after restarting the client.

  • Fixed an issue where clicking on the Last Played player area in friends list opens up the Add a Friend prompt without automatically filling in the player's BattleTag.

  • Fixed an issue where the credits can be played while in the Today's Quests screen.

  • Fixed an issue where the quest Level Up! is completed upon reaching a total level of 10 instead of level 10 on one Hero.

  • Improved many graphical effects and fixed various graphical and game behavior issues.

  • Fixed a number of audio and sound issues.

Mac

  • Toggling full screen mode on some resolutions and monitors will no longer cause the window borders to be visible.

  • Fixed a graphical issue that could occur when changing resolutions.

  • Loading into a game will no longer cause graphical issues while on high graphics settings.

  • The system menu bar will no longer display over the client in full screen mode.

  • Using Alt + Tab to switch focus while in full screen mode will no longer cause the dock to appear over the client.

    • This experience bonus persists on logout
  • Nephalem Glory has been added to the game
    • Occasionally during battle, monsters will drop Power Globes when damaged or killed
    • Power Globes grant the Nephalem Glory buff, which causes players to deal additional damage in the form of golden lightning bolts and increases their movement speed for a short time
    • This buff can stack up to three times
  • New hero stats have been added to the game
    • These include Toughness, Healing, Splash Damage, Cooldown Reduction, and Resource Cost Reduction
    • Life Steal has been redesigned and is now less effective at higher character levels
      • At level 60, Life Steal is reduced to 10% effectiveness

  • Player hit boxes have been adjusted to more closely represent character models
    • Both male and female models of the same class share the same size hit box
  • Followers now automatically level with characters
  • Quests now occasionally grant item rewards when completed during the leveling process

    • The following bosses have received the largest changes to their encounters:
      • Maghda
      • Siegebreaker

CRAFTING AND ARTISANS

  • Crafting has received several quality of life changes
    • Crafting materials have been condensed into two item level tiers: 1-60 and 60-70
      • This change is to reduce the amount of stash space consumed by crafting materials and simply older crafting recipes
      • All crafting materials currently in character inventories and stash have been converted accordingly
    • All crafted items will now roll with stats appropriate to the character crafting them, using the Loot 2.0 Smart Drop system

    • Items purchased from vendors are now flagged as such, and cannot be salvaged

DIFFICULTY

      • Normal, Hard, and Expert are immediately available
      • Master unlocks upon completing Act IV
      • Torment unlocks upon reaching level 60
      • Torment level also includes a difficulty slider, offering an additional six adjustments with increasing rewards and more powerful monsters
      • Each level offers new bonuses and rewards, visible in the difficulty selection menu
    • You can now lower your difficulty setting in-game
      • However, increasing your difficulty still requires exiting your current game
      • This option is disabled in Hardcore mode
    • To account for these changes, monster density has been adjusted across all Acts

EVENTS

  • Cursed Objects
    • Chests and Shrines around Sanctuary now have a chance to be cursed, starting an event once they are inspected
    • Like other events, completing a Cursed Chest or Shrine provides a small gold and experience reward, as well as either a Radiant Chest or a random Shrine buff
    • These events offer a variety of challenges, including endless monster waves and timed events
  • Infernal Machines
    • Torment level difficulty is now required to use Infernal Machines

ITEMIZATION (LOOT 2.0)

  • Itemization has undergone a major overhaul:
    • Legendary and Set items are now Bind on Account
      • Players in multiplayer games may trade Legendaries and Set Items they find with others who were present for the drop for up to 2 hours after the item is acquired
    • The Smart Drop system has been implemented
      • All items that drop have a chance to roll as "Smart Loot"
      • Smart Loot items roll intelligently based on the character being played (example: A Wizard is more likely to find items with Intelligence or bonuses to Wizard skills than a Barbarian)
      • Class specific items will no longer roll stats inappropriate to their class (example: Intelligence will no longer appear on Mighty Weapons or Belts)
    • New item affixes have been added to the game

Blizz News 1/23/14

The last two weeks have brought a lot of info and fun things to the wonderful worlds Blizzard has made for us.

We start out with Starcraft II. Patch 2.1 launched this week bringing a lot of changes and some pretty awesome features. Full patch notes can be found here, but there are some very nice changes to be aware if you aren't one of those patch note readers. First Blizzard has changed the StarCraft II arcade system to be completely free. All that is required is an account for the free Starcraft II Starter Edition.

New extension mod capabilities have been added for those developer types to add some interesting features to standard melee maps. The best way to see exactly what fun things you can do with this would be to take a look at the preview.

Any Carbot fans out there? Want to show of your StarCraft II profile with one of those awesome characters? Well get to leveling because now we have new rewards and new levels to achieve in Heart of the Swarm. Helped along by a quadrupling of the amount of XP gained with the First Win of the Day XP bonus.

My personal favorite out of the 2.1 patch is an addition of the classic Starcraft soundtrack in Starcraft II. To get that awesome music from the original, check out the sound tab in the options menu and choose between Starcraft II, Starcraft/Brood War music or both.

In the World of Warcraft we have our first look at Artcraft by Chris Robinson, senior art director for WoW. In his first article posted we have the reveal of our new human female character model. The model honestly looks great even for it being Alliance. Check out the full post here. However we did catch a small little detail which if followed through on would make a lot of people happy –

“We’re looking at these model revamps as a sort of “spiritual update” to the art content that currently exists in-game—except we’re completely redoing them from scratch. That includes the base model, skin tone variations, customization options (e.g. wrinkles, scars, moles, earrings, etc.), hairstyles, and any skin variations for NPCs you see out in the world, like Iron Dwarves or Leper”

Mag’har and Grimtotem skins anyone?

The Lunar Festival started in WoW this week on Monday and lasts until February the 3rd. Get out into the world and help honor your elders in Azeroth. Complete all the in game achievements and get rewarded with your own title of Elder.

For all the mount collectors out there the Iron Skyreaver has been released and is available in the blizzard store. Want to feel like a member of the Iron Horde already invading Azeroth? This may be right up your alley. Take a look at the preview below.

In the World of Diablo Blizzard has already enabled the background downloader for Reaper of Souls. Models and other data that is already confirmed and ready to go for the expansion will be put on the downloader which has been estimated to be about 6GB in size. Coming along with this, those that have not yet upgraded to the desktop app for Battle.net will get the update automatically when patch 2.0.1 launches at some point before March 25th. The app can be downloaded anytime if you want to try it out now.  Check it out.
