TCA: THE END! Or... is it?

Hey there geeks.  bad news... TCA is gong to have to get bagged and boarded for the time being.  Alex and myself really want to keep doing this, but the time is just not right at the moment.  I am really sorry, and stay tuned for more details.

Breaking news! Dwayne "The Rock" Johnson to play Black Adam

After months of teasing us about it, and apparently being given the chance to CHOOE which character to play, Dwayne "The Rock" Johnson revealed today via Twitter that he has chosen to take on the Anti-Hero / mostly villain known as Black Adam in what seems to be a "Shazam" single title to be brought out by New Line Cinema, and to be written by Lost writer Darren Lemke.

There are no further details right now, but we will keep you in the loop, and we'll discuss it on this month's TCA podcast.

Review #1 -

Title: The Eldritch Age

Creator: JF Dubeau

Summery:

The Eldritch Age is a long form, story-based, fantasy web-comic. It is set in the far future, after the Industrial Age and after the Information Age. The story focuses on Ydriss, the daughter of a Drakestrian (dragon rider) who is tasked to carry a dragon egg on a pilgrimage to become a dragon rider herself. On her way she meets with other characters making the pre-requisite friends and enemies along the way.

Opinion of the Narrative:

Pros:

The story at it's start is simple and easy to understand. It isn't overly bogged down with exposition or narration, the actions of the characters unfold naturally, and at no point does it feel rushed. The characters also feel very true to themselves, maintaining their own distinct personalities and while they stick to form, for example Xander is the happy go lucky curious kid, they are not locked into stereotypes.

Cons:

the only “flaw” I found is that in ten pages the female lead, Ydriss never gives her name nor has it given by anyone else, nor to her and Xander have any sort of mutual introduction. That may change later on, but it is generally a bad idea to go so long with no name to your main character, unless that is the point of the story.

Opinion of the Art:

Pros:

The art has a rounded organic feel, the characters feel 'soft' in their designs, which lends itself nicely to the story and it's pace, and it is easy to tell what it is we are looking at. The colors are bright and vivid and are no dulled even when darkness falls, but is not so saturated as to be an eyesore. The majority of the coloring is earth tones, and the vividness makes them feel lush and alive.

Cons:

Some actions are at time unclear, on occasion a character will be shown moving but it is difficult to discern why they moved and what action they are attempting to perform, however it is not so bad that it makes the story unreadable and is something I believe will be improved with practice.

Any critical problems/ Advice?

The one thing I would strongly advise is that why the creator is able, to switch to a site or layout more conducive to web comic. As I did have difficult at one point finding the actual start of the comic. There are some character intros/illustrations near the start that once on them the 'next page' button disappears. I found that to avoid this I should start at the most recent pages and click the 'start' link from there, rather than starting from the original link I was given.

Recommended for?:

I would recommend this web series for anyone who likes mid-evil sword and sorcery stories with a calmer pace and more grounded characters. The art work is visually appealing and would appeal to all ages including children. As such I would also recommend it for parents who want to share their love of comics with their children. However parents should always check the content before hand to make sure they themselves find it suitable.

The Comic Alliance: Issue 1: What is old is New (52) Again

Welcome to THE COMIC ALLIANCE! This is the show where I have hand-picked the best of the best, also the most aggressive comic lovers that I can get to record with me, also totally not making up something until I can come up with a tagline, THIS IS THE COMIC ALLIANCE!

You know me from the Geek I/O show, where I get yelled at for talking about comics too much as it is, and I also have run the 10 minute mini-cast Comics on The Go and formerly Comic geek I/O, I’m CJ Boat

and, from How it Stacks, Jonathan DePew also known as JD! And saving the best for last, artist extraordinaire, Alexandra Schoell AKA ChaosChild!

Let’s go around and tell people why they should listen to us about comics!

Alex:

I would like to do a segment where I talk about and review a webcomic series. It’s very difficult to break into comics and there are tons of them that go unnoticed, I’d like to use this segment to help them out. The madness of last week means I haven't gotten to line any of them up. So I thought this might be the time to simply introduce it to listeners and give them ‘the rules’

Rough Approximation:

Everyone loves comics, some of us even like to draw them. But for those who have a story to share, it can be seemingly impossible to get people’s attention. This segment  will be dedicated to exposing lesser or unknown comic artists on the web.

I will read the first ten pages of the comic to get a feel for the series and will provide a review and critique. What kind of comic is it? what genre? what’s it about? is the story (if there is one) interesting? how does the artwork stack? and where can this comic be found?

The rules of submission are as follows:

1. If you are not the creator, contact to this person MUST be provided so we can notify them and seek permission to feature them on the show. If you’re a fan of a series you may also contact the creator and tell them about us instead.

2. Comics submitted must have at least ten pages. Why ten? so consistency of work and story can be established.

3. The comic should have panels, it may not be only or mostly splash pages. (A splash pages is a comic page that contains a full page image and no other panels) out of ten pages there should be no more than 2 splash pages.

4. Your comic should be a comic. No novels with occasional illustrations.

5. there MUST be a location on the web for your work. This could be a free site like deviantart or tumblr or an independant site. But we must have somewhere to send listeners.

5a. Do NOT email the pages of the comic to me, link to the site only

6. Do not be worried about art or story quality, or weather or not I will like it. This Segment is to provide promotion and honest advice. I am not the sort of person who will rip your comic apart and simply say it sucks, and it is possible to have a good series if it is lacking in the art or story department, and people can always improve.

7. Mature content, sex, nudity, violence, is allowed, however you must say so in your submission.

7a. Unacceptable mature content includes things such as: comics geared towards promoting racism, rape, abuse, hate crimes, etc. It also includes content such as pedofillia or graphic dpeictions of abusive acts like rape.

Submitters should also take note that we may receive many other submissions, as such it may take a while for me to get to them, if you do not fulfill the requirements your submission will be declined.

You can send your submissions to my e-mail; [email protected] please put “Comics Alliance Podcast webcomic submission” as the subject.  and include a little bit about yourself, what name we can refer to you by, and a little biography if you wish, and most importantly a link to page one of your web comic.
