The Geek I/O Show: Episode 33 - Mean Clean Steam Machine

September 29, 2013

This week on the Geek I/O show, we were joined by our very own Raul Garza to talk tech, gaming, and other nerdy topics. He brought it, baby!

We discussed how the Steam Machine doesn't clean carpet, Steam OS goes anywhere, Magic is expanding, Llama faces on Netflix, suspending belief for Now You See Me, poor Budlong experiences Bubble Guppies, Rachel hates Dora, Somebody buys Blackberry, Netflix gets an Emmy, a new line of Kindle Fires are revealed surprisingly quietly, Google is old enough to get its driver's permit, and NASA has a machine that can find you in a pile of rubble. Plus! How to grow a nose on your forehead!

Join us on Geek I/O, won't you? We'll tell you what the fox says.

We're taking a survey of our listeners, and we'd like you to participate. It will help us learn more about you - no matter how long you've been a listener or how frequently you listen to this show. So please take a few minutes to take our listener survey. And you can complete the survey anonymously. Thanks!

Remember the days as a child, when you would put the cartage of your preferred game (at the time, either Pokémon Red or Blue, personally I played Blue a load more than Red) into the Gameboy and lose hours trying to find, at the time, all 150 Pokémon, defeating other random Pokémon trainers and discovering new cities or towns along your adventures. For the record, I am not 100 years old, but rather a traditionalist, a person who does not like changing something that works. The Pokémon franchise or brand for a lack of a better word, has evolved and sadly intern has become one of the most complex games to comprehend and cannot be simply picked up and expect to start playing.

As consoles developed throughout time, so it appears so did the Pokémon series. My first experience of this was Pokémon Stadium for Nintendo 64. Pokémon Stadium, along with the N64 Transfer Pak, brought your Pokémon to life on the ‘big screen’ and as an extra bonus mini games, for those times if you needed a break from all the stress of Pokémon training (as it is such a stressful task playing a Pokémon game.)

Shifting though time at a quicker pace (because I could be here all day), we Pokémon games outside of the “traditional method” include Pokémon Pinball, Pokémon Snap, Pokémon Puzzle, Pokémon Channel (or Pokémon TV), Pokémon Dash among others. Oh, we better not forget the disaster that was My Pokémon Range for the Wii (that I played!) a game that lets you watch as Pokémon and Miis interact with each other for the first time. Enjoy the relaxing Ranch life by viewing your Ranch and its Pokémon, taking pictures of their activities, and sending those pictures to your friends! (YUCK!)

Lastly let’s not forget that Pokémon can teach your children how to type, with help from the Nintendo DS. No Pikachu does not send shocks to your child if they get a word wrong, however the more accurate they type, the more chances Pokémon will appear, teaching them...something. Sadly as research for this article, I picked this game out of the bargain bin at a local game store and was disappointed, both at the game and the fact that Pokémon has gone off on this path.

To Nintendo and their resent Pokémon releases credit, they have been returning to the traditional plot and premise of ‘Gotta Catch Em All.’ Surprisingly, I can forgive the Pokedex growing to irresponsible numbers and recreate itself as it just adds more challenges for the player. With the release of Pokémon X and Y upon us, it quite exciting that, with the addition of some really cool technologies, it’s good to see Nintendo returning to a ‘modified traditional’ way of handling Pokémon franchise. But then again unfortunately, this run will only last so long and then the question will become, “How will Nintendo play with my Pokémon concept this time?”

Random Geek Outing :: Embedding a Google+ Post onto a website

September 26, 2013

Google+ now allows you to embed a public post into any* website. You'll notice in the example below you can interact with the post as you would natively on Google+, including expanding comments.

Here's an example from my Google+ profile:

Well isn't that just nifty?! Just click the drop down arrow on any public post and click the "Embed post" option.

This will work for ANY public post, not just your own. You may have noticed the asterix on "any" up top. Technically any site that allows javascript embeds will work, but some pages will require a bit more work. If you take a look at the screen capture below, you'll note must put in two scripts to enable the post. In Squarespace for instance you can embed them both into a blog post (yeay!), but I've heard there are issues with WordPress taking out any javascript from the post. You may have to follow the directions from Google VERY carefully.

A note from the Google Developer Blog:

In addition to posts that contain text and links,

the following additional types of posts are supported as embedded posts:
Posts with images - The post will render with the image. Clicking the image directs the visitor to the image view on Google+.
Posts with videos - The post will render with the video. Clicking the video will play the video within the embedded post.
Posts with links to a community - Your visitors can click through to view the community as they would in the stream.
The following post types are not supported:
Posts from within a community, including publicly reshared posts from a community.
Posts that are restricted to a Google Apps domain
Private posts
Events posts
Hangout on Air posts

There is one more thing (you may have already noticed) that I would mention. There is (currently) no way to adjust the width of the embed. I presume Google is doing some javascript magic, but it may not play well with the SquareSpace magic* that allows our site to resize dynamically to your screen size.

All said, it's pretty neat to see all that Google is doing to innovate on the web. Between this and the (hopeful) end of troll-feeding on YouTube I still have hope that Google will continue to "make money without doing evil".
